Empowered vs Vindicated
Empowered
positive feelingYou rang the letting agent back and said the Tuesday did not work, and then you named a day that did. A month ago you would have swapped your shift and said nothing. Empowered is the feeling of your own say returning to your hands: the decision about what happens next is, at least partly, yours again, and your body knows it before you can explain it. It is often quiet. Nothing has been won; one decision that used to be made about you is now being made by you.
Vindicated
positive feelingThe email is four lines long and you have read it six times. The figures came out the way you said they would, or the audit found the error exactly where you pointed, or a letter arrived saying the complaint against you has not been upheld, and each time you scroll up to check, the words say the same thing. Something that has been held tight for months lets go: the shoulders, the breath, the argument you kept rehearsing on the walk to work, to an audience that was never there. Vindicated is the feeling of the record being put straight, of the account you gave turning out to be the true one after other people had decided it was not. In some moments it is lighter than you expected. In others it is thinner, and both are honest.

Empowered's Perspective
Confident is the nearest confusion. Confidence is a belief about your ability and can sit alongside someone else holding every decision; you can be sure you would handle the money well and still have no access to it. Empowered is about access, the decision coming back to you. Assertive is the behaviour that often follows, the way you speak once you have that say, but people can be assertive without power, pressing hard on a decision that someone else still holds, and empowered without raising their voice at all.
Vindicated's Perspective
Relief is the release of strain and needs no one else involved; vindication is relief about a disputed account, and it points outward at the people who disputed it. Pride concerns what you made or did, while vindication concerns what you claimed or decided, and you can feel it about something you are not proud of at all, like a grim warning that came true. Vengefulness is where vindication can drift when it sours: the record is already corrected, but the feeling keeps wanting the others to pay for having been wrong.
