Empowered vs Powerless

Empowered

positive feeling

You rang the letting agent back and said the Tuesday did not work, and then you named a day that did. A month ago you would have swapped your shift and said nothing. Empowered is the feeling of your own say returning to your hands: the decision about what happens next is, at least partly, yours again, and your body knows it before you can explain it. It is often quiet. Nothing has been won; one decision that used to be made about you is now being made by you.

Powerless

negative emotion

A heavy fatigue settles into the limbs when someone loses their grip on influence and control. This state leaves people feeling unable to shape what happens around them or change circumstances that weigh them down, creating a profound sense of incapacity.

Empowered's Perspective

Confident is the nearest confusion. Confidence is a belief about your ability and can sit alongside someone else holding every decision; you can be sure you would handle the money well and still have no access to it. Empowered is about access, the decision coming back to you. Assertive is the behaviour that often follows, the way you speak once you have that say, but people can be assertive without power, pressing hard on a decision that someone else still holds, and empowered without raising their voice at all.

Powerless's Perspective

Powerlessness is often confused with helplessness, but there are key differences. While both emotions involve a lack of control, helplessness tends to suggest an inability to respond to a situation due to external factors, whereas powerlessness can imply an individual's perception of their own lack of agency. Powerlessness may involve the belief that one's actions do not matter, while helplessness may be more about being overwhelmed by circumstances beyond one's control.
