Depersonalization vs Detachment
Depersonalization
negative feelingYour hands look like hands. Not yours: hands, the general item, attached to an arm that responds when you ask it to and still reads as somebody else's equipment. Your voice leaves your mouth and arrives a fraction late, correctly accented, produced by someone you are only listening to. The face in the mirror is arranged the right way and belongs to nobody in particular. Depersonalization is that gap: the whole machinery of being you keeps running smoothly while the sense that you are the one inside it drops out.
Detachment
negative emotionSomeone at the table asks how your weekend was, and you hear yourself answer, pleasantly, accurately, from about a metre behind your own head. The conversation carries on. You are in it and you are not in it, and the gap between those two facts is the whole experience. Detachment is that steady remove: contact without contact, presence without arrival. Sometimes you put it there on purpose, because the alternative was feeling all of it. Sometimes it settles over you unasked and refuses to lift when you finally want it gone.

Depersonalization's Perspective
Derealization is the pair it gets mixed up with, and the line is simple even if you cannot draw it in the moment: derealization is the world going false, painted or two dimensional, while depersonalization is you going false. Numbness is the other confusion. Numbness is feeling nothing much while remaining clearly the person feeling it; here the feelings may still be technically present and it is the owner who has gone missing.
Detachment's Perspective
Indifference is often mistaken for it, but indifference genuinely does not care, and detachment frequently cares and cannot feel the caring, which is a different and more troubling situation. Numbness is closer, though numbness is an absence of registration, whereas in detachment things register perfectly well and simply fail to land. You can be detached and know exactly what you are missing.
