Burnout vs Drained

Burnout

negative feeling

The email has been open in front of you for four days. It needs two lines. You know exactly what the two lines are, and you cannot make your hands write them. That is burnout: not a bad week, but the slow discovery that the tank you used to refill on Sunday nights does not refill any more. Work has been withdrawing more than it deposits for long enough that the account is closed, and what remains is a flat, gritty competence that gets tasks done badly and feels nothing when they are done.

Drained

negative feeling

Your arm goes up when you tell it to, but it costs something now, and you notice the cost. Stairs become a thing you plan for. Halfway through a conversation you feel the words getting further away, and holding your end of it starts to feel like carrying something up a slope. Drained is not sleepiness. Sleep is a place you want to go; this is the sense of having been emptied out, of running on whatever was left in the bottom of the tank, with nothing arriving to replace it.

Burnout's Perspective

Exhaustion and burnout look alike from outside and are not the same. Exhaustion answers to rest: sleep, a week away, a lighter month, and it recedes. Burnout does not, because the depletion is not only of energy but of the meaning that made the energy worth spending, and no amount of sleep restores that. It is also confused with laziness, usually by the person experiencing it, though laziness does not come with guilt this sharp or with a body this tight.

Drained's Perspective

Exhaustion is about depth: you have been worn all the way down, and rest is the obvious answer. Drained is about emptiness, and rest has often already been tried without effect. Burnout is a narrower thing, tied to work and to the collapse of meaning in it, where drained can follow a virus, a bereavement or a long stretch of caring for someone and has nothing to do with your job at all.
